Travel insurance for British citizen living in NZ

Jul 27, 2014, 10:06 PM

Hi

Wondering if someone could help out with some suggestions here. I'm a UK citizen living in New Zealand on a 13 month work visa. I'm due to visit the UK in September and want to get travel insurance to cover my journey, however I'm finding that all the Kiwi providers state that to be eligible for their insurance you need to be a citizen or permanent resident of NZ, and the British travel insurance providers require that my insured journey starts in the UK!

Nightmare. Can someone help out?

Cheers

Adam

Bit of an issue, isnt it?

Maybe try the expat forums, or a specialist broker. Otherwise, retain an address in the UK...

I do still have an address in the UK but not sure how that helps as I'll be starting my journey from New Zealand.

What's this?

This doesn't sound reasonable. When I was younger I retained my UK address as my place of residency and postal address and that solved a lot of issues.

I take it that you are still paid up to the National Health Service and able to get free health treatment during your stay in the UK? Don't know how it works for a working visa as I am now at the retirement end. But if you are then is it just the flights you are in need of insurance for? Is there some policy issued by the airlines like there is with Coach companies where you buy for the trip?

Have you asked the insurance companies you contacted who refused you how/where you can get insurance for this?

What Sue said, eg what is the insurance for? If its just to cover cancellation or rescheduling of the flights in case of illness, how about the airlines own? I'd

never normally suggest that but in this instance it may be a simple if no doubt more expensive option. If there were other options :-)

You also need to think as to whether you would wish to be repatriated to NZ in the case of serious illness - or remain in the UK - and choose insurance accordingly

Some of the backpacker insurances - ??World Nomads from memory - don't have residence restrictions.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll have a look into what's been mentioned. I only need cover for flights and personal belongings. I did look into Air New Zealand cover but it seems their policy wording also has the residency restriction clause in it.

If this trip is for social reasons, is it possible that it could be covered by the insurance that you (presumably) took out to cover your travel to New Zealand and your travel back to the UK at the end of the 13 month period that you mentioned? Alternatively, if this trip is work-related, would it not be reasonable for your employer in New Zealand to make the arrangements?

Re. The UK address, many insurance sites are automated, and some require a UK address. If you can supply that, you will get further in the process, and may even get cover.

Some UK car hire firms ask for a UK landline phone number. Its just a quick way to check you have a base in the UK.

But yes, you need to consider repatriation. In fact, that should have been covered by insurance before you left the UK..
