Car Insurance waiver for Hotwire and Priceline car rentals

Jun 21, 2010, 10:33 PM

I was thinking of renting a car with Hotwire for a holiday in Orkando. If I get the car rental from Hotwire, will my Visa still be able to waive the car insurance or do I have to buy the car insurance?

Also, If I decide to bid for a car rental on Priceline, can I waive the car insurance with my gold visa card as I have paid for that benefit on the card.

Sorry if these questions seem strange, but this is my first time using Hotwire/Priceline for car rentals.

I would think it is down to the policy of the car rental company (Alamo, Avis, Budget or whoever) if they accept your Credit card insurance.

Otherwise I gather you have the option of purchasing insurance from either the car rental company, or from Priceline/Hotwire.

There's an FAQ which covers various insurance topics on Priceline so it may be worth looking there. They also have a number to call.

If you have car insurance at home -I would check with your agent(or call VISA). The 'extra' insurance can be a big scam in my opinion.

I have used Hotwire or Priceline many times for rental cars

It is the same as if you are renting from the specific company in terms of your credit card and insurance. The web sites are really just the middle men. You will be just fine!

In the USA most of us are covered by using certain credit cards. It is NOT up to the rental company to decide anything about insurance. It is up to the renter to decide what coverage he/she wants to take!!

Yes, Riffsmom is right. We just came back from Orlando and used priceline. We have StateFarm ins. Anyway, you must totally reject the car rental's offers of insurance or our visa will not cover if you accept any of the car rental ins. The car rentals will put pressure on you to get their ins. but don't fall for it. You don't need to have it.

As long as you pay for the rental with the credit card that provides coverage, you are covered. But it is not true that it is up to you to decide what coverage you take-it varies from state to state so you need to be informed before you rent a car. In Florida,it IS true that the renter can decide what coverage they want but the credit card coverage is not for liability and the rental car companies in Florida are required to provide only minimum liability coverage-so yes,you can turn

down all the coverage but you will have only that minimum liability and if there is a need for it,you are responsible, not the car company. But the laws-and threfore the coverage you need-is totally different outside of Florida. We rent in a number of different states and make sure to find out ahead of time whether we are being sold unecessary coverage or if we need the coverage. But in Florida, when we turn down the coverage that we know is not legally required, the car rental people always shake their heads dolefully.

This whole discussion only holds true for USA residents.

I have never been in a state in the USA where I needed any extra coverage than that provided by my credit card so I'd be interested to know what states require something different? So far I have not run into that.

California among others-as you probably know, many people who live in NYC do not own cars and therefore, have no insurance except what a credit card provides which is CDW. So car rentals in California require that you buy their insurance since the credit card protection is secondary to your car insurance. But In Florida, the car rental agencies have liability so you don't HAVE to buy it even if you have no car insurance. And yes,it all relates only to US residentfs

I actually didn't know that since I live in California and have insurance so did not know that our car rental agencies require anything of out of state people who have NO other insurance. I have never heard that mentioned by any of our visitors. Interesting but not about Florida.

pfar, as far as I know, UK car insurance and UK credit cards don't carry this insurance for your rental. Which is why UK renters always rent a car incl a full insurance package form a UK broker beforehand. This information above is for US renters.

If you hire a car w/o insurance, you will have to buy it piece by piece at the counter and it will cost you a lot more.
